Chapter 289: Heaven and Hell
Chapter 289: Heaven and Hell
After dinner, Huang Xiaochuan took Zhang Yun to the hotel. Since submitting her resignation, Zhang Yun had canceled her rented apartment and moved into the hotel.
After getting out of the car, Zhang Yun invited Huang Xiaochuan, "Why don't you come up for a coffee before you leave?"
Huang Xiaochuan quickly waved his hand: "No, you should get some rest! You can write to me when you have time!"
Zhang Yun didn't insist. She smiled, waved to Huang Xiaochuan, and walked into the hotel.
Huang Xiaochuan sighed, got into the car, and said to Zhou Wei, "Take me home."
Back home, Yu Xiang was still reading. The medical profession requires lifelong learning, and one must constantly improve their medical skills, so being a doctor is not easy.
Yu Xiang is still a medical student, and she has a long road ahead of her.
After Huang Xiaochuan entered the room, Yu Xiang, with her keen sense of smell, sniffed around.
"You've been drinking, haven't you? With a woman, no less!"
"Hehe! Dr. Yu is wise. I treated my teacher to a farewell dinner tonight."
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"Our statistics teacher received a job offer from a big bank abroad, resigned, and is going to work in the United States. Since we were teacher and student, I arranged to have a meal with her as a farewell gift."
"Go take a shower, you smell like alcohol." Yu Xiang waved her hand in front of her nose, annoyed.
"Yes, sir! I'll go right now!"
Huang Xiaochuan quickly went to the bathroom, and Yu Xiang followed closely behind, bringing him a change of clothes.
With a gasp, Huang Xiaochuan pulled Yu Xiang into the bathroom.
"Ugh, you've soaked my clothes!" Yu Xiang said angrily, punching Huang Xiaochuan repeatedly.
Before long, the two of them enjoyed the smooth, warm waters of the hot spring, where they spent the night in the cozy boudoir.
On Wednesday afternoon, the three of them went to Hongqiao Airport to pick up Wu Duo and Zhang Gaolei.
The plane arrived on time, but the customs and baggage handling took almost an hour before the two people finally emerged from the international arrivals exit.
With a shout of "Holy crap!", the five men hugged each other.
"Hurry up, let's get some dog food, and start with Nanxiang steamed buns and pan-fried buns," Wu Duo urged, wanting to go eat.
"Come on, dog? What's that? I've never heard of it before." Ding Yi didn't react for a moment.
"It's the English 'let's go'," Huang Xiaochuan understood and explained to Ding Yi.
Ding immediately exploded: "You son of a bitch, Lao Wu! You've been in America for half a year, and this is your English level? Did you waste all your education?"
Wu Duo was preoccupied with all sorts of delicious food and didn't care what Ding Yi was saying to him. He kept urging Huang Xiaochuan to drive faster, thankfully it wasn't rush hour and there was no traffic jam.
Just as eager as Wu Duo, Zhang Gaolei patted his belly contentedly after finishing two baskets of Nanxiang steamed buns and eight pan-fried buns.
"It would be even better with a bowl of spicy soup."
Ding Yi pointed at the two men and asked Huang Xiaochuan, "What kind of suffering did these two endure out there? Eating xiaolongbao and shengjian is like eating dragon liver and phoenix gall? Is American food pig swill?"
Wu Duo slurped up a bowl of wonton soup, having already swallowed the wontons, and even finished the remaining soup.
After Wu Duo reluctantly put down his bowl, he added, "Let's leave it at that for now! We'll make some more substantial dishes tonight."
Chen Zhe asked curiously, "Doesn't America have French cuisine? Isn't it supposed to be world-class cuisine? Why don't you guys go and eat there?"
Zhang Gaolei replied, "Eating something occasionally is fine, but what would it taste like if you ate it for a week straight?"
Wu Duo also said, "When I first went there, I thought the school cafeteria was okay, and there were many different styles of cafeterias to choose from. I tried everything, from steak and pizza to macaroni and cheese. But after a while, I started craving noodles with soybean paste."
"Me too, I'm craving lamb stew with noodles. That pasta stuff has no chewiness at all, and it's sour."
Wu Duo added, "And those dumplings, I threw up after just one bite. It was the first time I'd ever eaten sweet and sour dumplings, and they were absolutely awful."
Zhang Gaolei added, "The dumpling wrappers are made with flour kneaded with milk."
Huang Xiaochuan and the other two looked at each other. After hearing what these two said, it seemed that all the food abroad was terrible.
After returning, the two of them did nothing but sleep and eat. Huang Xiaochuan, Ding Yi, and the others had to attend classes, while Wu Duo and Zhang Gaolei would go out to find food on their own in the morning and at noon, and the five of them would gather together to chat and eat in the evening.
Wu Duo and Zhang Gaolei also chatted about their experiences studying in the United States.
"Objectively speaking, I can feel the exchange and collision between different cultures. There are many foreigners who go to the United States to study, bringing different cultures and ideas from various countries."
In classroom discussions, one can often hear a variety of different viewpoints and insights. This open academic atmosphere can encourage students to think independently and cultivate their innovative spirit.
The campus offers a wide variety of cultural activities, such as club activities, sports events, concerts, and arts festivals.
Furthermore, they frequently organize various patient events to enhance social skills.
It emphasizes cultivating students' critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, encouraging them to develop their personal potential, pursue their interests, and realize their personal value.

"To be honest, I spend most of my time studying at school and rarely go out. I can solve almost all my living problems around the school, except for food, of course. So what I see of America so far is only the university campus. I haven't had time to explore the outside world yet. I plan to find out what American society is like after I get my diploma."
Zhang Gaolei felt the same way. The university he attended was the largest university in the United States in terms of land area. It had a beautiful environment and was surrounded by various technology research and development companies, making life and study very convenient and comfortable, and the academic atmosphere was very strong.
Old Zhang was having such a good time inside that he didn't want to leave. Apart from the food, he was satisfied with everything else. If he could find a roommate without body odor, that would be even better.
Ding Yi widened his signature beady green eyes and asked, "Didn't you say there's rampant drug and gun violence, and racial discrimination? Listening to you guys, it seems like America doesn't have these problems?"
Huang Xiaochuan offered an explanation on behalf of Wu Duo and Zhang Gaolei.
"The universities they attend are full of the future elites of American society. Drugs and guns are basically not found there. Moreover, the surrounding area is affluent, with ample police funding and 24-hour police patrols, making it very safe."
However, the United States is a highly polarized society, with both rich and poor. The areas inhabited by the poor are the hardest hit by rampant drug and gun violence. This is also true of so-called red-light districts and slums. There are virtually no police officers maintaining order there, resulting in extremely poor crime rates. The underworld is responsible for maintaining order on the streets. You've probably seen plenty of Hong Kong movies and videos; the situation is basically the same.
So in the United States, the rich and the poor live in completely different societies. I read a novel that described this very vividly: "If you love him, send him to New York, because it's heaven; if you hate him, send him to New York, because it's hell."
My understanding of this statement is that for the rich, New York is heaven, while for the poor, New York is hell.
Old Wu and Old Zhang aren't short of money. Unlike other Chinese students studying abroad who have to wash dishes to earn tuition, they don't have the opportunity to experience the lives of those at the bottom of society or see its darker side.
The group thought Huang Xiaochuan's words made a lot of sense, but Ding Yi had some doubts.
"You've never been to America, how do you know so much?"
"Teacher Zhang studied in the United States for several years, and I heard some of the things from her." Huang Xiaochuan pushed the blame onto Zhang Yun without even blinking.
"How come I've never heard her mention this to me?"
"Trying to argue with me, huh? That night I asked you and Lao Chen to come with me to invite Teacher Zhang to dinner, and you two ran off faster than rabbits. Now you're saying you didn't hear Teacher Zhang mention America to you. Whose fault is that?"
Ding Yi immediately shut his mouth.
"Inviting Teacher Zhang to dinner??"
Wu Duo and Zhang Gaolei were unaware of Zhang Yun's resignation.
"Ms. Zhang resigned. She received an offer from Goldman Sachs, and I guess she's already on her way to the US?"
