Chapter 3285 Little Pine Tree's Midnight Academy
Early in the morning, amidst the birdsong and fragrant flowers, and bathed in warm sunlight, Robin arrived at Little Red Horse early to cry to her aunt about the inhumane treatment she had suffered the previous night and to denounce her grandmother's cruel methods.
Xiao Bai looked at her with pity, patted her head, handed her a tissue to wipe her tears, and comforted her, "Don't cry, don't cry. Didn't I tell you on the phone to apologize quickly? How come you still got beaten?"
Robin said pitifully, "I admit I was wrong, but, but Grandma scolded you, and I got angry when I was unhappy."
Xiao Bai: "Oh dear, this auntie! She always talks badly about me behind my back! What did she say about me?"
Robin: "She said that her aunt teaches Xiaobai all sorts of nonsense all day long, and looks like she's leading the child astray."
Xiao Bai jumped up and shouted towards the direction of the jianbing (Chinese crepe) shop: "Shovel!! Say it to my face if you dare—"
Immediately, she glanced at her uncle, who had brought Robin over earlier and was still chatting with Li Baibai in the yard. She realized she had been a bit careless, saying such things in front of her uncle, and feared he might complain when he got back.
No, I need to say a few words to my uncle later.
Xiao Bai continued to comfort Robin: "Why don't you go to sleep for a while? You must not have slept well last night. Oh dear, look at you, you have dark circles under your eyes, you look like a little panda."
Bai Jianping said with a smile, "She slept so soundly last night, she was fast asleep and we couldn't wake her up."
Robin said, "No, that's not true! I was so angry last night, I couldn't sleep!!"
Bai Jianping continued to undermine him: "I told you a story last night, and you fell asleep before I finished it. I watched you fall asleep."
Robin jumped up and down: "Grandpa, you hit me last night!"
Bai Jianping was shocked: "I hit you? Which hand did I use to hit you?"
Robin pointed to his two hands and said, "Both hands were hit."
Xiao Bai said disdainfully, "Uncle, I never expected you to be this kind of person. What kind of skill is it to beat a child? I will never admire you again."
Bai Jianping was speechless, thinking to himself, "When have you ever admired me?!" But he didn't have time to dwell on that now; he had to get to the bottom of things with Robin. How could he have hit a child? He had been standing up for Robin all night!
Finally, Robin said, "You hit me in my dream. You and Grandma hit me together, and I screamed and my bottom was all swollen."
Bai Jianping was completely speechless. He didn't want to ramble on anymore; they weren't on the same wavelength.
Because she was scolded, Robin didn't go home all day. She stayed at Little Red Horse with her aunt to help the headmistress. Tonight, the first pilot school selected by the district will open for trial operation. Aunt Huang is the chief consultant and will evaluate these schools and make suggestions.
At 6:30 p.m., the first pilot school, "Little Pine Tree Midnight School" in Wutongli, officially opened.
This is the first school in the pilot program to complete its renovations and begin operation the fastest. The site was originally an unused reading room in the community activity center, 120 square meters in size. The district government funded a child-friendly renovation: impact-resistant padded walls, low bookshelves, brightly colored cushions, and a row of lockable individual lockers along the wall. The hardware is impeccable, even more standardized than Little Red Horse.
Teacher Xiaoliu, as the mentor assigned by Xiaohongma, arrived in Wutongli a week in advance. She and two full-time teachers selected by the street: one is Xiaoliu, a young social worker, and the other is Aunt Wang, a retired teacher who was rehired, to prepare for the opening of the park.
Today is the first day we officially welcome the children.
Ms. Liu stood at the entrance of the brand-new, bright school, feeling a little apprehensive, but mostly expectant.
The neighborhood committee had done some preliminary publicity and registered twelve children, all from dual-income families in the Wutongli community, ranging in age from six to ten. According to the plan, most of them should be able to come today.
At 6:10, the first child arrived.
It was a boy wearing glasses, about six or seven years old, carrying a bulging schoolbag, being led over by his mother.
"Hello, teacher." The boy's mother was very polite and pushed her child forward. "Jun Jun, say hello to the teacher."
"Hello, teacher." The boy named Junjun spoke softly, his eyes fixed on the ground.
Ms. Liu crouched down and greeted him with a smile, "Hello Junjun, I'm Ms. Liu. Is your schoolbag heavy? Would you like to put it down first?"
Junjun nodded but didn't move. His mother quickly took off his schoolbag, put it in a locker, and gave him a few more instructions such as "Listen to the teacher" and "Finish your homework before playing," before leaving in a hurry.
Teacher Xiaoliu led Junjun inside, and Aunt Wang greeted them warmly: "Little friend, come and sit here! Auntie will pour you some water."
Junjun sat stiffly in the chair in the study area, took out his workbook from his schoolbag, and buried himself in writing. He sat up straight, his pen-holding posture was perfect, like a miniature version of a model student.
At 6:20, the second and third children arrived one after another.
One was a little girl with pigtails named Xiaoyu; the other was a chubby little boy named Dongdong. The two seemed to be classmates. After they came in, they whispered a few words to each other and then obediently sat down in the study area to start doing their homework.
As Ms. Xiaoliu observed, a strange feeling gradually arose in her heart; it was too quiet.
The first half hour after Little Red Horse Park opens is usually the beginning of "chaos": children chatter about what they have seen and heard during the day, share snacks, chase and play, or lie on the mats and shout "I'm so tired", or sit on the steps in front of the classroom and laugh and giggle.
Doing homework? That's impossible!
Homework doesn't exist either!
But here, the three children each occupied a table, engrossed in writing, with only the scratching sound of their pens on paper.
The young teacher, Ms. Liu, whispered to Aunt Wang, "The children are so well-behaved."
Aunt Wang nodded with satisfaction: "Yes, they are all good children. Our environment here is good, so the children naturally follow the rules."
Ms. Liu opened her mouth, but didn't say anything. She walked to Junjun's side and asked softly, "Junjun, do you have a lot of homework? Do you want to take a break?"
Junjun shook his head, his pen still in hand: "Mom said I can only play after I finish writing."
“This isn’t school,” Ms. Liu tried to say in a relaxed tone. “You can drink some water, read a book, or chat with the other children first. You can do your homework later.”
Junjun finally looked up, pushed up his glasses, and asked with a hint of confusion in his eyes, "...Chatting? Chatting about what?"
Ms. Liu paused for a moment and then asked, "For example, what fun things happened at school today?"
Junjun thought for a moment and answered seriously, "I got 98 points on my Chinese test today, haha~"
Ms. Liu couldn't help but smile. Just as she was about to speak, she saw Junjun lower his head again and continue writing.
Ms. Liu's sense of unease deepened. She walked over to Xiaoyu, who was doing math problems with a furrowed brow.
"Xiaoyu, are you having some trouble?" Teacher Liu asked.
Xiaoyu looked up at her, smiled, nodded, and pointed to a word problem, saying, "I can't do this, it's so hard."
"Which one? Let the teacher see it."
“No need,” Xiaoyu quickly said. “Let me think about it. My mother said I can’t always rely on others.”
Ms. Liu paused for a moment, then could only say softly, "Call me anytime if you need anything."
At seven o'clock, two more children arrived. There were five children in the school, all of whom were sitting in the study area.
Aunt Wang was very satisfied with everything and asked Teacher Xiaoliu if all the children at Little Red Horse Academy were this well-behaved.
Ms. Xiaoliu shook her head without answering, and instead said, "Pour everyone a glass of water."
"I go."
Aunt Wang poured water for everyone, and the children politely said "thank you" before continuing their homework.
There was a tense silence in the air. Teacher Liu had been to Little Red Horse for on-the-job training and had witnessed its lively atmosphere. She was a little unaccustomed to the scene before her. She tried to lighten the mood and suggested, "Shall we play a game? Like Eagle Catches Chicks?"
"Teacher, I haven't finished my homework yet," Dongdong said earnestly.
Ms. Liu smiled and nodded in agreement. She looked silently at Ms. Xiao Liu, who finally realized where the problem lay.
These children are so well-behaved. They treat this place like another school, another place where they need to behave well. They come in with the mindset of completing a task: finish their homework, follow the rules, don't cause trouble for the teachers, and then wait to be picked up by their parents.
The relaxed feeling that Little Red Horse experienced after returning home is completely absent here.
