Chapter 1981 - 1970: Dragon Knight
Chapter 1981 - 1970: Dragon Knight
The distance from the dragon's head to the ground was no more than five meters, yet at this height, Ning Fan somehow felt an exhilarating sense of towering over all others. The mountain need not be high; having an Immortal makes it spiritual.
Ning Fan's exhilaration came not from the height but from the Black Dragon beneath his feet.
Conquering the most perilous peaks in the world was no match for stepping on a mythical creature.
"Divine Spirits... are nothing special!"
Ning Fan secretly scoffed, no longer fearing those lofty Immortal Gods as he once did.
"What's the difference between Divine Spirits and Mortals? They just possess more powerful strength. If I wield invincible power, Immortals, Gods, Demons, Buddhas, are all within my thoughts."
In this instant, Ning Fan's state of mind became open and clear, the shadow of losing his Golden Core vanished completely.
"You don't mind me stepping on your head, do you?"
Hearing this, the Black Dragon, who should have been furious, felt a slight chill in its heart, and its fiery anger vanished instantly.
The Black Dragon didn't know what had happened; it just felt that Ning Fan was a little different now. No longer as frivolous as before, he exuded an undeniable, world-conquering aura.
This aura wasn't even present in its father.
"I heard there's a profession in the West called Dragon Knight."
"There is indeed."
Right after saying this, the Black Dragon became tense and resolutely said, "You might as well kill me."
Ning Fan was taken aback and couldn't help but ask curiously, "Why?"
"I will never become your mount, just give up on this notion."
Ning Fan's expression turned cold, speaking chillingly, "Really? Are you not afraid of death?"
"Since I have to die anyway, what difference does it make if it's sooner or later?"
A fierce gleam flashed in the Black Dragon's eyes; if Ning Fan persisted, it would definitely turn hostile on the spot.
"This beast seems to mean it."
Ning Fan hesitated, indeed perceiving a resolve for death in the Black Dragon's words.
Just moments ago, it was content to endure indignities for survival, yet now it showed a willingness to die, a stark contrast suggesting something was amiss.
"Don't be so agitated. I was merely asking."
Ning Fan said calmly, "I have no interest in becoming a Dragon Knight. And if you want to die, I'm not stopping you. We'll part ways now."
"Really?"
"Of course it's true. I'll leave right now."
Feeling Ning Fan's right foot lift from its head, the Black Dragon hurriedly said, "That's not what I meant."
Ning Fan knowingly asked, "Then what's it about?"
"Dragon Knight."
Hearing this, Ning Fan suddenly expressed interest, speaking darkly, "Now I'm somewhat intrigued to see if you really aren't afraid of death."
The Black Dragon was stunned, then pleaded, "Master, please don't mess with me anymore."
"To voice such an embarrassing term, it appears this big lizard's desire to live is quite strong."
Ning Fan pondered, "So, you still don't want to die, but only if you don't become a mount. If you become a mount, you'd rather die. Is this correct?"
The Black Dragon gritted its teeth, "That's right."
"Why?"
This time, Ning Fan was genuinely puzzled. The Black Dragon had already discarded its dragon dignity to survive, yet it was adamant about not becoming a mount. It was indeed peculiar.
"Because..."
After listening to the Black Dragon's explanation, Ning Fan finally understood why it resisted becoming a mount so much.
A Dragon Knight, as the name suggests, is a knight who rides a dragon.
A knight's status is a symbol that comes from the person, not the ride,
The person is a person, the mount is a mount.
The status of a knight is not taken away because of a change in mount.
But a Dragon Knight is different; they are a whole.
A true Dragon Knight and the dragon sign an equality contract.
Equal lifespan, equal strength, equal life and death...
If an ordinary person gains recognition from the Dragon Clan and signs an equality contract to become a Dragon Knight,
Upon the contract's completion, they can share half the dragon's lifespan, half its strength, almost an overnight leap to greatness.
But this is unfair to the Dragon Clan.
To share half of one's strength with someone else for no reason: no being would easily agree.
And that's just strength; there's also lifespan.
Even if they can't ignite the Divine Fire to become a Divine Spirit, ordinary dragons have lifespans recorded by the millennium.
Becoming a Dragon Knight means losing half of that lifespan.
Due to human physical limitations, even with such a long lifespan, their bodies can't withstand the erosion of time, unable to live to a natural end.
If that were all, maybe, but the most frustrating part is the life-and-death equality contract.
One person and one dragon, no matter which dies, the other will follow in death.
It truly realizes the belief of not seeking to be born on the same day and month, but to die on the same day and month.
This is why the Black Dragon would rather die than submit.
Even if Ning Fan could live healthily for hundreds or even thousands of years,
To the Dragon Clan's long life, it's merely akin to a blink, a nap.
Moreover, to bind its life to that of a mortal? Naturally, the Black Dragon wouldn't agree: it's an exalted Divine Spirit, why bind its life to a mortal like some bug?
Death sooner or later makes no difference; the Black Dragon naturally resists.
"So that's how it is."
Ning Fan assumed a "knew it all along" expression; otherwise, why would this death-fearing Black Dragon have the courage to defy him?
"But isn't there a legend of many Dragon Knights? Even whole regiments?"
"Foolish human, you did say it's a legend."
The Black Dragon muttered to itself, then explained, "Master, the Dragon Knights you speak of, their mounts aren't true Dragons but Earth Dragons, Sub-Dragons with a trace of dragon bloodline, and humans don't contract with them."
After speaking, the Black Dragon reiterated, "True Dragons can never be someone else's mount."
In this statement, the Black Dragon lied.
In the history of the Dragon Clan, there have indeed been Dragon Knights, but they are incredibly rare, exceptions amongst exceptions.
The few Dragon Knights in existence, both human and dragon, were all lovers, signing this "unequal" agreement under love's magic power.
As for others, not even Divine Spirits can force a dragon to sign a contract.
"So, you'd rather die than comply."
"I wouldn't comply."
Seeing the Black Dragon's "I'll perish with you at any moment" gaze, Ning Fan laughed, "Don't be so tense. Even if you agreed, I wouldn't want it."
Ning Fan wouldn't dare to place his life in another's hands.
If one day the Black Dragon decided to end it and committed suicide, whom would he cry to?
This statement was quite displeasing to the dragon.
So many have cried and begged to sign a contract with the Dragon Clan,
Yet, to Ning Fan, this ordinarily coveted dragon was now the object of disdain.
